project Summary

Modern Terminals Limited (MLT) owns and operates Container Terminals 1, 2, 5 and 9 (South) in Kwai Chung Port, Hong Kong, with an annual handling capacity of 5.5 million TEUs. MTL decided to upgrade the capacity her existing container terminals for accommodating the increasing demand of logistics industry and deployed the upgrading plan in Year 2004.

Terminal 5 Strengthening project is the first step of structural enhancement in MTL’s overall upgrading plan. The minimization of interference to terminal operation terminal by the works is the utmost concern. To maintain 24-hour based non-interrupted terminal operation environment, the works had to be work in bays progressively with restricted access and hours.

To enhance the berthing capacity of the terminal, a 350m long insitu retaining wall was proposed at the back-reach of existing quay deck area. In view of tight schedule and fast tracking programme, we proposed to precast the retaining wall into 4.85m long units with approx 100t each.

The precast units were then directly installed by lifting pontoononto the permanent position.

Through our value engineering and proactive attitude in providing our best quality, the overall completion of works was two months earlier than the original schedule
